Plaque installation puts Egerton Ryerson into context

Last June 25, the Ryerson community joined with its Indigenous students, faculty and staff at the unveiling of a contextualizing plaque installation at the Egerton Ryerson statue on Gould Street. The plaque, which outlines the educator’s participation in the establishment of the residential school system in Canada, is part of the university’s commitment to truth and reconciliation with the Indigenous community.

Krishan Mehta appointed assistant vice-president, engagement

Krishan Mehta is Ryerson’s first assistant vice-president, engagement, in University Advancement.

In this role, Mehta will lead the Alumni Relations team, while also embracing a broader mandate of engagement across a variety of communities at the university.

Since joining Ryerson in 2013, Mehta has been a key player in the success of Ryerson’s advancement activities and was previously executive director, campaigns. He was a major contributor to the achievements of the Make Your Mark campaign, which raised more than $200 million for student awards, research, programs and capital projects.

Ryerson names new deans

DAVID CRAMB appointed dean, Faculty of Science

David Cramb joined Ryerson as dean of the Faculty of Science for a five-year term effective October 15, 2018.

A true believer in interdisciplinary collaboration, Cramb has led crossdisciplinary teams of science, medicine, engineering, education, and arts researchers along with industrial partners and practicing clinicians. These collaborations have spanned many institutions and crossed borders into the U.S. and Europe.

Cramb joins Ryerson from the University of Calgary, where he was the head of chemistry and director of the nanoscience program.

His achievements include spearheading the school’s nanoscience minor program and establishing Canada Research Chair positions.

As a chemistry professor, his research focuses on the behaviour of nanoparticles for biomedical applications.

DAPHNE TARAS appointed dean, Ted Rogers School of Management

Distinguished academic Daphne Taras joined the Ted Rogers School of Management for a five-year term as dean effective July 1, 2018.

Taras previously served as dean of the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan from 2010 to 2016, where she created a micro-loan fund for student-led initiatives, developed one of Canada’s largest student-run investment portfolios, and created numerous experiential learning opportunities. Under her leadership, the university developed a formal relationship with the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology, building a pathway for Indigenous students to achieve university degrees in commerce and accounting.

Before that, she was a professor at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business and its associate dean of research and director of the PhD program.
