Experiential learning

IN 2016, SENECA PROFESSOR Peter Moscone had
a vision of students performing professional
services for not-for-profit organizations.
The students would benefit from the
hands-on experience and the organizations
would receive products and services they
may otherwise be unable to afford. He
approached President David Agnew with
this idea and Seneca 360 was born.
Since then, Seneca students from various
programs have engaged in projects such
as website design, event management, video
production and strategic planning.
In order to expand the initiative's community reach, funding was needed from
external sources, and KPMG was more than
willing to help. The multi-service consultancy is responsible for Seneca's financial
auditing and wanted to explore ways to
help students. Supporting the next generation of consulting professionals through
Seneca 360 was the perfect fit.  
Through the KPMG Foundation, Seneca
received funding for three years to help
students offset costs like transportation,
childcare and accommodations and allow
them to take part in Seneca 360 projects
while keeping them free of charge to notfor-profits.
" The KPMG Foundation seeks to bring
about systemic change in business and
society, " says Diane Del Monte, Partner,
Audit, KPMG Enterprise. " That's why we
invest in business education and volunteerism at all levels over the long term. Seneca
360 is a great initiative, and we are proud to
help support it. "

KPMG funding
supports students
like Chloe Tam.

Chloe Tam is one of 41 students who
benefited from a Seneca 360 project.
She and a classmate produced an internal
communications strategy for the Jane/
Finch Centre. Ms. Tam speaks highly of
the experience.
" We worked very hard to produce material that we thought was appropriate and
that the Centre needed. "
Ms. Tam also found her in-class lessons
would often overlap with her work for the
Jane/Finch Centre.
" I was able to learn it, get tested on it,
apply it, and see that it actually worked, "
she says.
Ms. Tam has since graduated and works

as a Special Events Co-ordinator at the
Kidney Foundation and serves as a board
member at Memory Lane Home Living,
where she wears many hats. She credits
Seneca 360 for her ability to balance various
responsibilities.
" While studying and also working on
that project, it taught me how to split my
time and how to be more organized, " she
says. " I'm using the exact same skills I used
at Seneca 360 right now. "
