A continuation of values
Jane Forbes
plans her tribute
to Seneca
HOW MANY STUDENTS do you know
who have taken a Caribbean
cruise as a project? Hosted
their own booth at a student
business trade show? Won a
prize at an entrepreneurship
conference? Or done a work
placement in Italy?
These hands-on learning
experiences were facilitated by
retired professor and co-ordinator
Jane Forbes. Known for
her energy and commitment to
innovative teaching, Ms. Forbes
spent 32 years in Seneca classrooms,
sharing her passion for
entrepreneurship, business,
tourism and hospitality services
with thousands of students.
She served under all five
Seneca presidents and taught at
four campuses (Yorkdale and
Sheppard, now long gone). Her
first job was teaching with a
focus on individualized learning,
pioneered by then dean,
now Seneca Retirees Association
President Bill Riddell.
Ms. Forbes sees many of the
innovations from that centre
now the norm in addressing
current student needs.

As she contemplated the role
Seneca has played in her life,
and the lifelong friendships she
has with colleagues, Ms. Forbes
decided to give even more to
the school she called home by
including a donation to Seneca
in her will.
" I want to thank Seneca for
its impact on my life, " she said.
" This gift represents my gratitude
and a continuation of what
I value. "
Guided by the Advancement
team at Seneca, Ms. Forbes
chose among several options
for a planned gift that were
financially strategic and reflected
her wishes.
" The idea came after reading
an article in RED, " said Ms.
Forbes. " I was inspired by the
idea of a legacy gift and the
many ways I can give to Seneca
now and in the future. "
Ms. Forbes was also encouraged
to take action after attending
recent celebrations of life
for friends.
" I realized that I needed to
act on a planned gift now, to be
sure that my philanthropic
wishes are clear, " she said.
Ms. Forbes is already a Seneca
donor, having contributed to
the Student Experience Fund,
the Seneca Retirees Association
Bursary and, most recently, the
HELIX Venture Fund. As a
former co-ordinator of the
Business Administration -
Entrepreneurship & Small
Business diploma program, she
describes HELIX, an on-campus
business incubator and
accelerator available to all students
and members of the community,
as " a dream come true. "
And dreams are what keep
her wanting to donate.
I was inspired by the idea of
a legacy gift and the many
ways I can give to Seneca
now and in the future.
