Programs for Newcomers to Canada
Bridging career
gaps for international
professionals
GETTING INTO CANADA'S LABOUR MARKET can
be challenging for newcomers. But thanks
to Seneca's bridging programs and workplace
communication courses, internationally
trained professionals can reclaim their
careers with support from both faculty
and industry.
" We provide students with a connection
to their professional community, " said Amy
Koning, Manager, Special Projects, Faculty
of Continuing Education & Training (FCET).
With each program designed to help
newcomers build professional, technical,
communication and occupation-specific skills,
Ms. Koning says students are positioned to
thrive through occupation-specific skills
development, networking events, connections
to the community, resumé refinement and
interview preparation.
Gerry Santullo, a graduate of Seneca's
Accelerated Building Environmental
Systems (BES) bridging program, agrees.
" Working with the bridging program
team and other students was the fondest
memory of my time at Seneca, " he said.
" I really appreciate all the support the
team provided to help us network and
secure jobs. "
Mr. Santullo, who completed the BES
bridging program and other BES certifications
at Seneca, is now working for Cadillac
Fairview as a building operator at the Toronto
Eaton Centre. He is also an active employer
partner of the BES bridging program and
volunteers as a mentor to current students.
" I chose the BES program because it gave
me the opportunity to quickly become part
of the evolving industry that is building
operations and facility management, " he
said. " The program not only supported my
personal achievements, but it allowed me
to help others succeed. "
Seeing others succeed, he adds, gives
him a sense of fulfilment.
" For me, making a difference is a true
measure of success, " he said.
