The more virtual Seneca - services at the 'hub' of innovation
Throughout the pandemic, Seneca quickly introduced new virtual
learning and service options that kept students on track and
allowed operations to continue without disruption. With each new
innovation, it became clear that changes resulting in better service,
more flexibility and more convenience would be maintained and
enhanced for the more virtual Seneca.
Nearly 100 flexible classrooms have been created, giving
students the choice of learning at home or in person with the same
experience. Hundreds of microcredentials and short courses are
now available to help professionals retrain and upskill. Seneca has
also gone cashless and moved all transactional services online.
These initiatives set the stage for The Service Hub, Seneca's
transformative innovation in service delivery.
Through The Service Hub, Seneca has combined the latest
technology with innovative practices in customer support to offer
students multiple channels to get information and support on
everything from registering and paying fees, to athletics and
recreation, libraries, tutoring, counselling, career planning and
much more.
Students are used to getting information through online
self-service solutions. The Service Hub meets them where they
are in the world.
" What sets The Service Hub apart is how accessible it is, "
said Radha Krishnan, CIO and Vice-President, Customer Support.
" Students and employees can find clear, consistent information
across nine channels: web, intranet, chatbot, apps, social media,
video, text, email and on site at Seneca's campuses. Similar services
we've investigated elsewhere have been available - at most -
across four channels. "
Like many Au Large initiatives, development of The Service
Hub was rapid. Consultations with students, program co-ordinators,
the services teams and union representatives began in January
2021 and the Hub launched in the summer of 2022. It has been
designed to be a centralized source of information and assistance.

Previously, each department at Seneca had to maintain its own
content. Now there's a dedicated team making updates constantly.
" As students and employees become more familiar with The
Service Hub, it will become the first stop for answers, saving time
and ensuring the latest information is always provided, " said
Renata D'Innocenzo, Vice-President, Strategy and Brand. " The
Service Hub's extensive knowledge base frees up specialists to
support students with more complex issues and allows for more
meaningful in-person interactions when students are on campus. "
The technology behind The Service Hub was selected by a
cross-functional team of 60 Seneca experts in student services,
counselling, academic advising and ITS, who tested and shortlisted
various options. It responds to the questions and keywords,
providing knowledge-based articles, not just general messages
or FAQs. The more it is used, the smarter it becomes.
" With each inquiry received at The Service Hub, we learn
something new, building our capacity to provide the right
answers quickly and clearly, " said Mr. Krishnan. " Wherever you
are in the world, whether you are a full-time, part-time, domestic
or international student, you will get the help you need. "
Up next: a new strategic plan
The many Au Large initiatives underway and in the works are
setting a strong foundation for Seneca's future direction.
Up next is the next Strategic Plan, which will be unveiled this
fall. The plan will be informed by the Au Large pillars of equity,
sustainability and being more virtual. Moving forward, all Seneca's
academic, business and infrastructure decisions will be guided by
these principles.
" Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our students,
employees, alumni and many supporters, we've made great progress
on our Au Large priorities, " said President Agnew. " But there is still
a long way to go and our new Strategic Plan will help us get there. "
