Although it was difficult to juggle her work and

Larissa Andrade's studies teach her
how to thrive in Canada
studies at times, Ms. Andrade said it was an invaluable
experience. Whenever she was faced with challenges,
she turned to her professors for advice and guidance.
" My teachers had all the patience in the world and
answered all of my questions, " she said. " I didn't just
have teachers, I had mentors. "
Despite her busy schedule, Ms. Andrade made
LARISSA ANDRADE HAS ALWAYS liked solving problems, but
she found herself grappling with a big one when she
moved to Canada in 2017.
With more than a decade of experience in the transportation
and customs industry, Ms. Andrade wasn't sure
how to get a job in her chosen profession after leaving her
home in Vitoria on the southeast coast of Brazil.
" My career is an important part of who I am, " Ms.
Andrade said. " I didn't want to start over. "
The solution? Seneca.
One month after settling in Toronto, Ms. Andrade
enrolled in Seneca's two-year International Transportation
& Customs diploma program to learn about
the specific procedures, detailed logistics and project
management skills used by international business
professionals in Canada.
With the support of her professors and through the
Seneca Works career portal, she landed a part-time job
after her first semester as a customs and compliance
specialist with Applied Lubrication Technology (ALT),
a supplier of conveyor chain lubrication in Mono, Ont.

in extracurricular activities. She participated in the
Seneca Leadership Program, which gave her the
opportunity to volunteer for open houses and attend
professional development seminars.
" I not only learned practical career skills, I learned
how to live and thrive in Canada, " she said.
After graduating in 2018, Ms. Andrade continued
her part-time job and was promoted to an operational
supervisor position. In that role, she took on the
responsibility of launching ALT's new branch in Mexico.
These days, Ms. Andrade is a customs and vendor
specialist at Prodomax, an automation company in
Barrie, Ont. In this job, she makes sure million-dollar
shipments of automated manufacturing solutions
successfully move across borders.
" I am very proud that I was able to continue to grow
in this field after emigrating from Brazil, " she said. " It's
something that I couldn't have imagined. "
I not only learned
practical career

how to live and
thrive in Canada.
