A passion that can't
be put out
Scott Thomas bleeds blue, with a strong
foundation in Seneca red
" University degrees are a great asset, but the practical
experience is what I really took away from Seneca. "
Mr. Thomas attributes much of his recent success to
an individual development plan (IDP) that Zurich uses
to encourage employees to consider their long-term
career goals.

main colour of Zurich Insurance Group, where he is
the Vice-President, Head of Zurich Resilience Solutions,
Zurich Canada. " I really love this company and the
people. "
After graduating from Seneca's Fire Protection
Engineering Technology program with high honours,
Mr. Thomas accepted a position with Zurich as a risk
consultant. It may not have been the job he imagined,
but as Mr. Thomas completed the program, his interests
had shifted from firefighting to the more technical side
of fire prevention, protection, and investigation.
" What attracted me to the fire protection program
was initially my interest in being a firefighter, " Mr.
Thomas said. " But when I started learning some of the
engineering concepts, I realized that was something I
wanted to explore. "
Though grades were not necessarily a strong suit of
Mr. Thomas' during high school, he excelled at Seneca.
" I really nailed it at Seneca because I found there
was a practical application to things like thermal
dynamics and hydraulics, " Mr. Thomas said.

As part of his IDP, Mr. Thomas spent three years
with his family in Zürich, Switzerland working at the
company's head office. It was one of many unexpected
paths that he has taken during his time with the company.
Another is when he served as vice-president,
head of human resources for two years.
During his time in HR, Mr. Thomas and his team
helped guide Zurich Canada through the COVID-19
pandemic - something that he says is one of the prouder
accomplishments of his career. His heart has always
been on the risk side though, and he is happy to be
back in his area of expertise.
Mr. Thomas credits the experience he gained at
Seneca and his philosophy to never close any doors for
his success.
" I'm proud of my roots, " he said. " That background
[with Seneca] got me the job in the first place and has
given me a strong foundation throughout my career. "
