POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION can
change the lives of vulnerable
and equity-deserving youth who
often face challenges accessing
education. These challenges can
include a lack of financial or
technological support, less than
satisfactory grades during the
admissions process and even
choosing between furthering
one's education or supporting
a family.
Seneca's Youth to Postsecondary
(Y2P) program provides
free academic upgrading and
life skills training to young
adults, many of whom live in
Toronto's Jane and Finch community.
Students of Seneca's
Y2P program must overcome
many barriers to get back into
the classroom and build successful
careers. Most students
in the Y2P program are new to
Canada and have struggled to
find meaningful employment,
especially during the pandemic.
Since 2018, the Peter Gilgan
Foundation has been a Y2P
donor, positively impacting the
lives of more than 150 students
and their families. The financial
support that the foundation
provides ensures that students
can afford basic necessities,
such as technology for virtual
classes, textbooks, groceries
and other living costs.

" We have continued our
support through the years
because of the impact we've
seen it make on so many young
people's lives, " says Stephanie
Trussler, Board Member, Peter
Gilgan Foundation. " The academic
upgrading, access to
technology and tutoring is
where things begin, but I think
it's the support and encouragement
from the Seneca staff that
makes the biggest difference. "
Thanks to the Y2P program,
and the support of the Peter
Gilgan Foundation, students
like Alexander Osahan have
reason to believe a brighter
future awaits.
" I want to be a nurse and the
Y2P program is setting me in
the right direction, " says Mr.
Osahan. " It hasn't been easy,
but I believe that there are
always different paths to your
desired destination. "
There are many Y2P financial
assistance programs offered
through the Peter Gilgan Foundation.
This includes its Access
to Technology Bursary, which
funds new laptops for students
like Sameerah Seedat, who
hopes to study Recreation and
Leisure Services at Seneca after
completing the Y2P program in
December 2022.
" I was struggling to do my
work through a tablet and I
questioned if I could finish the
class, " said Ms. Seedat. " Since
getting a laptop through the
Peter Gilgan Foundation, it's
been so much easier for me to
do my work. "
This past year, almost
two-thirds of Y2P students
completed the program and
continued to take academic
upgrading courses, which is the
next step before enrolling at
a postsecondary institution.
Three-quarter of the students
who received support from the
Peter Gilgan Foundation in 2021
intend to continue their studies
at Seneca.
" We believe that everyone
deserves opportunity and this
program provides that to hardworking
young people, " said Ms.
Trussler. " Students uncover a
potential that they may not have
realized they had or, at the very
least, are given the opportunity
to follow their ambitions and
fulfil their goals. "
