Virtual Seneca
Flexible learning
breaks down barriers
AS SOMEONE WHO STUDIED and worked in
the field of journalism before getting into
academia, Kurt Muller can't help but be a
little jealous of the way today's students
are able to prepare for their careers.
" I wish some of the technology and
innovation for flexible learning were
available when I was in school, " said Mr.
Muller, Dean, Faculty of Communication,
Art & Design. " I think we would've seen
more student success, and in general, I
think more people would've been able to
access postsecondary education if the playing
field was a little more equitable. "
Flexible learning brings classrooms to
students and lets students choose whether
they attend class in-person or online on a
given day. It is one of four program and
course delivery options Seneca has been
offering since last fall. The other three are
online, hybrid and in-person.
As part of the Au Large initiative
launched in the early weeks of the pandemic
to build the equitable, sustainable and
more virtual Seneca, faculty and staff have
been working together to offer innovative
solutions that create safe, accessible and
engaging classes in flexible learning.
For example, Seneca's Information
Technology Services (ITS) has reconfigured
more than 100 classrooms to support the
format, installing auto-tracking cameras
that follow professors as they move and
providing wireless microphones so they can
easily be heard by all.

Professors can also work with ITS to find
customized solutions. For classes like Brooke
Jacobs' studio production, being able to see
what the professor is doing on specific equipment
alongside what is appearing on the
video monitors in the classroom allows for a
seamless learning experience, regardless of
where the student is.
" If I was teaching the audio board, for
example, I would do a picture and picture
screen with my face speaking in a small
window and my hands operating the faders
on the audio board in the bigger window, "
said Mr. Jacobs, Professor, School of Marketing
& Media. " It has allowed students to
connect with me and see my face and also
see what I am talking about. "
Mr. Muller said eliminating hurdles
is what Au Large and flexible learning is
all about.
" The way we deliver programming, the
way we use technology, the advances we
have made in terms of making Seneca a
more welcoming space - it's hard to
believe, " Mr. Muller said. " Our employees
always put students first. The tech is really
secondary to the agility and innovation that
lies with our employees. The tech is just a
tool. It's their innovation and creativity that
is making this all possible. "
