The DFI-EFFC International Conference on Deep Foundations
and Ground Improvement is being held May 18-20, 2022, in
Berlin. The conference theme is Smart Construction for the
Future, with presentations that will demonstrate how stateof-the-art
technologies and approaches provide high-value,
sustainable and resilient geotechnical solutions for complex
projects.
Preconference industry-led workshops will be presented
on building information modeling (BIM), digitalisation and
sustainability.
Planned social activities include a networking welcome
reception in the exhibit hall on Day One, a conference
banquet at the Classic Remise Berlin vintage car garage on
Day Two, and a post-conference tour. There will also be
activities for young professionals and students.
The Organizing and Technical committees are being led
by Conference Chair Professor Frank Rackwitz, Technical
University of Berlin, and Program Co-Chairs Frank Haehnig,
managing director, Bauer Spezialtiefbau, and Professor Rolf
Katzenbach, Technical University of Darmstadt.
Technical Sessions
The technical sessions include papers and presentations on
the following topics:
* Ground Improvement Advancements
* National and International Case Histories
* Smart Monitoring and Testing
* Deep Foundation Advancements
* Other Topics in Deep Foundations and Excavation
* Sustainability, Lifecycle and Circular Economy in
Geotechnics
Special Sessions and Workshops
Special sessions will include technical paper presentations
and panel discussions to review and debate the following
technical topics and implementation:
* Sustainability: Representatives from three geotechnical
sectors (construction, design and manufacturing) are presenting
brief viewpoints and participating in an open forum
on the status of sustainability in the industry. The discussion
will address how various sizes and types of companies
define sustainability, implement sustainable practices,
measure and report on sustainability, and demonstrate
how sustainability goes beyond environmental considerations
to address social and economic aspects.
* Working Platforms: A technical session is being presented
on the international state of the practice for design and
maintenance of safe working platforms. Technical paper
presentations will cover advancements in design and
testing approaches and research efforts. With audience
engagement, industry leaders will address challenges and
perspectives related to enforcement and contracts.
John Mitchell Lecture
Maurice Bottiau, managing director of
Franki Foundat ions Belgium, is
presenting the 12th John Mitchell
Lecture, " The Engineer, Lawyer and
Contractor: A Philosophical Questioning
About the Future of Geotechnical
Engineering. " This lecture honors the
memory of John Mitchell, killed in a
tragic job site accident, for his enthusiastic
support of DFI's early conferences held outside the U.S.
and DFI's role as a leader in the global industry. Bottiau is the
director of the French, Dutch and U.K. branches of Franki, and
has more than 30 years of experience in the design and
execution of piling, diaphragm walls and soil improvement. He
has served in numerous international industry leadership
roles, including EFFC president, DFI trustee and DFI Europe
board founder and member.
