A Message from the Chair
In 2022, our indust ry lost two
outstanding individuals. Clyde Baker
was a former DFI Educational Trust
board member and world-renowned
deep foundations practitioner. Bernie
Hertlein was a current Educational
Trust board member and expert in
nondestructive testing and evaluation
of deep foundations. Many of us had the
pleasure and honor to know and work
with these outstanding gentlemen.
They served our industry, DFI and the
Educational Trust well, and we thank
them for their service and commitment
to advancing the state of practice in the
deep foundations industry. They will be
sorely missed.
I encourage individuals
and companies to honor
and perpetuate the legacy
of their influential leaders
by establishing a
scholarship through the
DFI Educational Trust.
Also, to inspire their families, colleagues,
clients and others in our
industry to continue paying it forward
for student scholarships, research and
other programs that support attracting
the best and brightest to the deep foundations
industry. The fond memories,
opportunities and rewards can be
boundless. Great examples include
recently established scholarships such
as the Goble Rausche Likins (GRL)
Scholarship, and the Clyde N. Baker, Jr.
Helen Robinson, Athena DeNivo, Theresa Engler, Bernie Hertlein and Joe Engles at the Gala
Foundation Engineering Scholarship for
which Hertlein inspirationally led the
fundraising efforts.

initiatives or creative ways to
raise funds to support the Trust, as well
as those in need of the Trust's support, to

The Annual Gala
The popular annual Trust Gala Fundraising
Dinner was held at Terrace On
The Park in Corona, New York, on
November 3, 2022. The festive evening
raised funds for Trust scholarship
programs that support students interested
in the deep foundations industry.
Proceeds from this event are being
distributed equally to benefit two
funds: the Clyde N. Baker, Jr. Foundation
Engineering Scholarship Fund and the
DFI Educational Trust General Fund.
Merjan and Tamaro
Scholarships
The Trust recently awarded scholarships
from the Stanley Merjan City
College of New York (CCNY) Civil
Engineering Scholarship Fund and the
George J. Tamaro Manhattan College
Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund.
The students were recognized at the
15th DFI Educational Trust Gala.
