New Year. New Officers. New Offerings.
In the last month of 2022, my mind was saying
" I can't wait for this year to be over! " Then
luckily, I realized that 2022 actually turned out
pretty well and each difficulty provides
another learning opportunity. The negativity
was because 2022 brought major challenges,
personally and professionally. I almost lost my
husband, Herb, twice during his four-month
stint in hospital/rehab and lots of my close
friends, colleagues and acquaintances faced
similar health crises. DFI faced financial challenges as inflation rose and the market
dropped. On the flip side, 2022 brought me my second daughter-in-law (see Nov/Dec
2022 message), made me a grandma (this is my precious Leo enjoying his first Christmas
with Grandma), saw Herb improve and regain strength, welcomed new
employees who are adding a wealth of energy and knowledge to DFI, and we had an
amazing annual conference where attendance reached near pre-pandemic numbers.
So now I say, " Hey, 2023, Bring It On! What do you have in store for us? " For one, it's
always exciting yet bittersweet when there's a change in DFI's leadership every other
year. I thank Michael Wysockey for his leadership as president through two very
unusual and difficult years and welcome Gianfranco Di Cicco and Lori Simpson to the
executive committee. Di Cicco was a DFI ambassador for many years during his world
travels as a consultant, bringing members our way and I remember saying " we've got
to get this guy on our board, " and we did in 2010. I can't wait to see what he has up his
sleeves for 2023. Simpson became a trustee several years later, bringing with her
many years of industry experience and a desire to learn as much as possible about the
history and policies of our institute so she could contribute thoroughly to all our
discussions and planning. I'm thrilled to have a woman as an officer for the first time.
Other things I don't have to wait for this year include new offerings that DFI is

bringing your way. One is a new section of this magazine, the " Risk Corner " (pg. 103), a
brief column contributed by our Risk and Contracts committee, which is sure to be
useful to our readers. There's also a new webinar series being brought to you by the
Driven Pile committee called !mpact. The series will represent technology, design
and innovation within the deep foundation industry focusing on driven piles. Our
podcasters are also cooking up a new series or two - one being interviews from the
Women in Deep Foundations Committee and the other a " deep dive " into the major
challenges facing our industry. Plus our technical committees are finalizing several
consensus guides and research reports that will be released throughout the year, so
keep your eye on your emails and our website.
What do you think 2023 has in store for you? Keep a positive mindset and you'll
find that overcoming the challenges that are bound to come your way allows you to
grow. It's all a matter of your perspective. Hmmm, guess it's apropos that DFI48 in
Seattle is themed " Embracing Change. "
