Another aspect that contributed to sequencing challenges
was that anchors were generally spaced 15 ft (4.6 m) centerto-center,
which imposed restrictions on where drilling and
grouting activities could take place within a 24-hour period.
This required a daily dance, moving back and forth between
anchor locations to keep the drilling on track. Mixing in a
handful of anchors that required multiple rounds of
waterproof grouting would throw a wrench into plans, but
they were overcome with premeditated contingency plans.
At the end of the anchor's service life (when sufficient fill
has been placed in the new lock at the Soo), the subcontractor
will come back to de-tension the anchors.
Temporary casings at upstream hybrid wall
Vendors that contributed to the rock anchor scope of work
include Penndrill, which provided a bulk cement silo; Imdex,
which provided rig alignment and survey instrumentation;
and Terramar Instruments/Robertson Geo who provided the
optical televiewer.
Upstream Hybrid Wall
The final scope of work for the Soo Locks site in the 2023
construction season was drilling in temporary casings to
support construction of the upstream hybrid wall, a
component of the waterproofing system that ties together an
existing coffer cell with new cells being constructed for the
project. This wall consisted of nine pipe piles socketed into
rock with sheets driven between them to create a waterproof
retaining wall to support excavation of the new lock. In order
for the prewelded sheeting interlocks to align with the
sheeting that would be driven between the pipe piles, 0.25 in
(6 mm) tolerances were required on pipe pile plan location
and verticality. The subcontractor drilled in a temporary 45 in
(1,143 mm) diameter casing through about 25 ft (7.6 m) of
overburden material until seating into rock, then drilled out
