the open-hole rock socket with conventional augers and core
barrels. With the inside of the casing excavated and the rock
socket drilled, the general contractor then set its pipe piles
before concreting in the socket length. Once all the pipe piles
were installed, it would later install the sheeting between the
pipe piles to complete the wall.
The subcontractor used a Liebherr LB45 rented from Hub
Foundation to advance the casings and drill out the rock sockets.
Conclusion
Moving millions of tons of cargo through the Soo Locks and
across the Great Lakes saves billions of dollars in freight costs.
The Soo Locks are a vital piece of infrastructure in the U.S. and
this massive project will provide a much-needed resiliency to
their capabilities.
Phase 3 work is estimated to be completed by 2030. When
finished, the new lock at the Soo will have two, 1,200 ft (365 m)
lock chambers and one 800 ft (243 m) lock chamber. The
subcontractor completed the NPP bridge drilled shafts, the
upstream hybrid wall, the rock anchors and about half of the
grout curtain in the 2023 construction season and will
resume work on the grout curtain in 2024.
Three of the four scopes being subcontracted - the grout
curtain, upstream hybrid wall and rock anchors - are
predecessors for dewatering and excavation for the new lock
and critical milestones in completion of the overall project.
