The two microtunnel alignments
are the Bay Park alignment, which has
eight shafts, and the Cedar Creek
alignment with six shafts. The Bay Park
alignment originally had nine shafts;
however, Shaft BP-6 was eliminated.
The two alignments are separated by
approximately 7 mi (11.3 km). The soils
along the Bay Park alignment consist of
fill; a variable thickness of organic
materials; and very dense, poorly
graded sands with interbedded seams
of clay and silt along with some gravels.
Along the Cedar Creek alignment, the
soils include fill over loose to very
dense poorly graded sand with some
silt over a discontinuous clay layer that
caps a very dense sand layer under
artesian conditions. Groundwater is
generally 2-13 ft (0.6-4 m) below
ground surface and is considered
slightly brackish in some areas. The
shafts were required to be designed to a
100-year flood level, which is above the
ground surface in several areas.
Performance Criteria for SOE
The contract allowed the design-build
team to determine which shafts would
be used as launch shafts and which
would be receiving shafts. The contract
also allowed the team to enlarge
or reduce the shaft diameters to
Project location, shaft l and microtunnel drive directions
accommodate microtunnel boring
machine (MTBM) operations, pipe
lengths, existing utilities, available
easements and any other factors.
In general, the launch and receiving
shafts had to meet the following
performance criteria:
* Provide a safe and stable excavation
* Prevent damage to nearby structures
and utilities by limiting
settlement and lateral movements
including consolidation settlement
* Limit groundwater inflow to 45 gal
(170 L) per minute; active dewatering
was not permitted
* Be sized for microtunneling operations
and any permanent build-out
requirements
* Maintain equipment within the
specified easements
* Provide a minimum factor of safety
of 1.1 against buoyant forces
* Provide protection against the 100year
flood
* Have means and methods selected
that minimize disturbance due to
noise, vibration, dust, mud or other
nuisances, in accordance with the
contract requirements
