* The pier design successfully controlled
settlement of the zone load
test to within project specifications.
* The total settlements obtained from
the load test and the back calculation
of Eg performed suggests that
the Impact pier elastic moduli in the
soft silts were higher than what we
had assumed prior to the test. The
initially assumed pier modulus in
the silts was Eg=75MPa (10,900 Psi).
The pier modulus in the sands
appears to have been similar to what
was initially estimated.
* Settlements occurred quickly during
the test. Two likely explanations are
that most of the footing load was
concentrated in the first 5 m (16 ft) of
the soil profile (densified sands), and
that the permeable Impact piers provided
a quick drainage pathway to
speed consolidation in the soft silts.

It is not clear how much of the densification
of the upper sands was due
to execution of RIC points, as the
post-installation CPTs were performed
after the RICs points were
performed. As expected, good densification
was achieved in the upper
sands as these deposits had trace to
little fines content, whereas little to
no improvement was observed in the
silts due to their high fines content.
Gianni Martinez, P.E., has more than 9 years
of experience in the geotechnical engineering
industry and serves as a senior project
engineer at Geopier, where he is responsible

for projects in the U.S. West Coast, Europe,
Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions. He
holds a bachelor's degree from Universidad
Rafael Landivar in Guatemala and a
master's degree from Virginia Tech.
Kord Wissmann, Ph.D., P.E., BC.GE, is the
president of Geopier and has more than 25
years of geotechnical-engineering experience.
Wissmann holds 30 U.S. patents, has
authored more than 35 papers and is a past
president of the Geo-Institute. He earned
bachelor's and doctorate degrees from
Virginia Tech and master's degree from the
University of California, Berkeley.
Brian Metcalfe, P.E., has more than 20
years of experience in the geotechnical engineering
industry and is the vice president of
engineering at Geopier. Metcalfe holds
bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia
Tech, and has been an invited speaker
nationally and internationally at geotechnical
engineering conferences and technical
workshops related to the application of
ground improvement for foundation support
and seismic liquefaction control.
