from opportunities because he knew his
product was not the best for the purpose
required, and would even suggest
competitors if it were the right thing to
do. Pirigyi gladly mentored many
professionals in the industry.

After serving in WWII, Clo began his
career working for contractors in Brazil,
where he emigrated after leaving Italy
in 1950. In 1972, Clo Zironi Machines
was born from his experience and skill
at fixing and designing machines.
Partnering with his brother, Alfredo,
they built a crane and construction
equipment rental company, before
transitioning into the foundation
equipment manufacturer known today.
Loris Clo's favorite part of the business
was designing new machines. Family
was paramount to him, and his sons
joined him in the machine shop. Both
sons, Dalvio and Marcos, went on to
earn mechanical engineering degrees,
and continue to carry on their father's
legacy in the business today. In
addition, grandchildren Giuliano and
Marcello now lead the U.S. branch of
the business. Loris was married to his
wife, Licy, for 65 years.
Stephen Edward Pirigyi, 83, a longtime
employee of Manitowoc, died this
spring. Pirigyi loved the craft of selling
heavy equipment, and had been a DFI
member since 2002. He worked at
Mani towoc for 38 years before
" retiring " for a fraction of a second. Then
he shared his passion and skills for
other enterprises, helping them be
successful in a challenging and
competitive environment. He was a
titan in his industry, known for always

appointed John Konwick as Northeast
sales manager. He will
oversee all aspects of
sales/consulting in the
foundation, utility and
pile driving industries
for that area. Konwick
sits on the board of
directors for the ADSC
Northeast, and has over 20 years of
experience in the industry as a sales and
products support specialist for American
Piledriving Equipment and J&M
Hydraulics, and as new parts manager
and service manager at ECA. The
American division of CZM Corporation
has become its main operation and
headquarters for this leading foundation
equipment manufacturer in North and
South America.
Konwick
Sissy Nikolaou, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE,
F.ASCE, has been appointed leader of the
Earthquake Engineering Group at the
National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST). It is one of four
research groups in the Materials and
Structural Systems Division
of NIST's engineering
laboratory, and
develops, advances, and
deploys measurement
science to reduce the
risks to buildings and
security, safety and sustainability of the
nation's built environment. Her group
also supports the National Construction
Safety Team and National Earthquake
Hazards Reduction Program. She will
work with stakeholders to identify
major measurements science needs for
reducing earthquake losses. A consulting
engineer for over 25 years with
global projects, her work has focused on
areas such as performance and
resilience-based design, soil-structure
interaction, seismic and geohazard
analysis and developing emergency
preparedness plans. A passion is supporting
new engineers, and Nikolaou is
meaningfully involved with organizations
regarding inclusion and equity of
women, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and other
underrepresented groups in engineering.
Nikolaou earned her master's and
doctoral degrees from the University at
Buffalo with a focus on earthquake and
geotechnical engineering. She is an
advisory member of the NSF-funded
Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance
Association, and a governor
and treasurer of the Geo-Institute of the
American Society of Civil Engineers, as
well as a member of the society's
executive committee of the Infrastructure
Resilience Division. Nikolaou's
recognitions include receiving the
Prakash Prize for Excellence, and the
WSP Technical Fellow of Earthquake
Engineering distinction.
