Sharing Knowledge
Knowledge is power and sharing knowledge is the key to unlocking that power.
Many have paraphrased or expanded on Sir Francis Bacon's saying " Knowledge
itself is power " from his work Meditationes Sacrae (1597). Therefore, for over four
centuries, education and constant learning have been the key to increasing not only
what you know but also your confidence, advancement and achievement, thus
providing you with opportunities.
Sharing knowledge has been part of DFI's mission and practice since its
formation. Our institute was born from seminars where all stakeholders involved in
a deep foundation or excavation project communicated their knowledge to each
other. It continued with the formation of technical committees developing
consensus guides and manuals and members contributing to international and
national conference proceedings. The sharing of knowledge was also evident when
DFI started distributing a newsletter that later became a magazine full of articles
authored by those in the industry. Next, the DFI Journal was launched as an
information resource and outlet for practice-oriented research so that academia
could share their knowledge and discoveries with practicing professionals in the
construction industry. And now, knowledge sharing has taken the form of webinars
and podcasts.
These publications and resources are one of the many benefits of being a DFI
member. They spread knowledge and provide members with the power to continue to
learn from each other, influence practice and advance the industry. I encourage you to

webinar recordings and podcasts. Downloaded documents and peer-reviewed
resources from the publication store remain in your DFI profile under " my products "
so you can refer to them again. You also have access to all the proceedings of events
that you've attended, many of which include not only the technical papers but also
the presentation recordings and PDFs of the PowerPoint slides. Our flagship
magazine webpage includes issues from as far back as 2012 and the journal website
(www.dfi-journal.org) includes volumes since inception in 2007. Also don't forget that
DFI participates in the OneMine.org document library where DFI publications as well
as many documents on mining and tunneling are available at no cost to members.
Under " new publications " you'll find an update to the Augered Cast-in-Place Pile
Manual, Third Edition 2016, which now includes an errata sheet added in May; the
Drilled Shaft Committee's consensus document on combined side and base resistance
in rock-socketed drilled shafts published at the end of last year as a standalone
document and a journal paper; and the research report titled " Guidance for Factoring
Structural Resistance for Landslide Stabilization and Excavation Support. "
Make the most of your membership and not only capture power by utilizing our
resources but unlock that power by sharing it with others. Submit an article, write a
paper or give a presentation to transmit your knowledge to your fellow colleagues
