(2.7 m) thick blanket was required due to deeper excavation.
Uplift forces were resisted by four rows of tie-downs spaced at
10 ft (3 m) on center. Tie-down design loads ranged from 35 to
55 tons (32 to 50 m tons).
The temporary deck at Avenue B, besides providing a work
platform for construction equipment and lateral support for
sheeting during excavation, was designed to support a hanger
system for maintaining critical utilities running along the
center of the entire length of the excavation. These utilities
included two Con Edison oil-o-static lines, a 20 in (50.8 cm)
water main and a 12 in (30.5 cm) steam line.
The excavation occurred in stages, and internal bracing was
installed and preloaded as the excavation proceeded to the top
of the jet grout blanket. The substation structural box was then
constructed of reinforced concrete in stages, as the bracing was
removed on the way up.

Conclusion
The alternative excavation support scheme developed and
implemented for construction of subway improvements at
the Manhattan end of the Canarsie Tunnel Rehabilitation
Project resulted in significant savings in cost and time. That
was true when compared to the originally suggested rigid
walls, while the alternative also provided groundwater cut off
and minimized detrimental lateral movement and

settlement of all adjacent structures, including the existing
subway, buildings and utilities. All work was able to be
performed while the First Avenue Station remained open to
the public and with full train service.

America office in New York City, provided the Silent Piler and
Judlau contractor team support. The New York City Transit
Authority embraced the alternate solutions and innovative

construction success.
