experience providing recommendations
for design of a variety of deep foundation
systems; performing and evaluating
static and dynamic load testing; and
performing and interpreting integrity
tests, including low-strain integrity
tests, crosshole sonic tests, parallel
seismic tests and thermal profiling. He
graduated with a bachelor's degree in
civil engineering from Marquette
University and a master's degree in civil
engineering from Missouri University of
Science and Technology.
" I have been a member and champion
of DFI for 15 years, " says Glisson.
" As the director of technical activities, I
look forward to working with the committees,
regional chapters, industry
alliances and DFI team to deliver outstanding
technical programs and
resources that promote the advancement
of the deep foundations industry. "
COMMITTEE CHAIR PAUL AXTELL, P.E., D.GE
DFI announces that Matthew Glisson,
P.E., has joined the institute as the
director of technical activities, starting
February 14. In this role, he liaises with
the technical committee chairs to
ensure that DFI's technical programs are
high quality, accurate and relevant to
current industry practice and needs.
These programs include committee
research, publications, conference and
seminar content, as well as speaker/paper
solicitation. Glisson will also identify
new collaborative opportunities in the
deep foundations industry.
" We are very excited to have
Matthew join DFI as the director of
technical activities, " says Theresa
Engler, executive director of DFI. " As a
long-time DFI member, an active committee
member and an experienced
geotechnical engineer, he is ideally
suited to direct DFI's technical programs
and future goals. "
Glisson has over 20 years of experience
as a consulting geotechnical
engineer, most recently as a technical
leader and principal engineer with
Braun Intertec in St. Louis, Missouri,
where he led the company's deep
foundations group. He was responsible
for coordinating, performing and
reviewing design and testing on deep
foundation projects, and in developing
and evaluating geotechnical engineering
policies. Glisson has extensive

Drilled Shaft
The Drilled Shaft Committee is excited to
be engaged in meaningful and practical
endeavors, including projects funded by
the DFI Committee Project Fund. In
addition, committee members are
developing a consensus document on
the simultaneous mobilization of side
and base resistance in most drilled shaft
rock sockets. A dedicated task force of
experts on the topic has volunteered to
develop the guidance.
The members are: Scott Jacobs, P.E.,
Keller, Ben Turner, Ph.D., P.E., Dan Brown
and Associates: Bernie Hertlein, GEI
Consultants; Kirk McIntosh, Terracon
Consultants; John Turner, Ph.D., P.E., Dan
Brown and Associates; Jesus Gomez,
Ph.D., P.E., GEI Consultants ; Bernardo
Jimenez, H SolĂs; and Paul Axtell, P.E.,
D.GE, Dan Brown and Associates.
Aspects of thorough site characterization,
informed design, quality construction
practices and detailed inspection
are so integral to the conclusion
that, in most cases, the mobilization of
side and base resistance in a rock socket
occurs at compatible displacements.
Exceptions in some unique geologic
settings do exist, karst for instance, but
nationally, are not the norm based on a
review of available bi-directional load
test data - that is, where quality site
investigation, construction, clean-out,
and inspec t i on
were performed
and documented.
The task force plans to complete the consensus
document, including independent
review by the DFI, in 2022.
Our committee has sponsored three
Committee Project Fund projects that
are near ing complet ion. Arash
Khosravifar, Ph.D., of Portland State
University, is leading a project titled
Combined Effects of Lateral Spreading
and Superstructure Inertias. This
interesting project will end in September,
and we expect to hear about it either
at SuperPile '22 or DFI's annual
conference. Anne Lemnitzer, Ph.D., P.E.,
of the University of California - Irvine, is
leading two projects. The first is a
continuation titled Shear Magnification
in Rock-Socketed Piles - Part 2:
Numerical and Parametric Studies.
Final results are expected by this fall.
The second is research on curves in
p-y
both sand and clay; the intention is
updating the curves embedded in LPILE
and other software based on results
from high-quality lateral load tests, with
final results expected in 2022.
Finally, in collaboration with the
EFFC, DFI research on support fluids
continues. The principal investigators
are st i l l seeking access to U.S.
