Sustainability
Last year was a very productive year for
the Sustainability Committee after
several years of minimal activity; the
committee began holding monthly
meetings (the last Tuesday of each month
at 11 a.m. ET) to discuss a wide range of
topics associated with the sustainable
development goals of the United Nations (see the previous
committee report in the March/April 2021 issue of Deep
Foundations magazine).
The main discussion objective was to determine the focus
of the committee activities, which are:
(1) The carbon calculator, a tool developed in cooperation
with the European Federation of Foundation Contractors
(EFFC) a number of years ago. It was agreed that these partner
organizations would again work to develop this tool further,
and also to include examples of it in use in future issues of
Deep Foundations magazine. A case study example comes from
Keller in Singapore, where an alternate foundation design
reduced carbon emissions equivalent to the emissions
generated by an average car that is driven 350 times around
the world (see page 69). We hope that examples like this
illustrate that more sustainable designs do make a difference.
(2) Conveying why sustainability is something management
of any company in the deep foundation industry should
focus on. To convey that message, the committee held a
webinar in the first quarter of 2022 where a panel of four U.S.
company executives discussed this, and attendees received
practical, real examples of action items that can be implemented
right now. In addition, the committee is deeply
involved with a series of sustainability-related sessions and a
workshop for the DFI-EFFC conference in Berlin, Germany, in
May. We will focus on sustainability-related initiatives that
can be enacted today as well as future such initiatives.
(3) Finally, the committee is aiming to make educational
resources more available about this topic. The redesigned DFI
website is an ideal tool to do just that, and the committee page
already has several links to very relevant documents and
websites. We would welcome articles, case studies, papers or
any other material that can help other DFI members promote
sustainability in their companies.
The committee will continue to work on these three focus
areas throughout 2022 and would welcome more DFI member
