When it comes to membership associations, most offerings are often produced by
dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers who wish to give back to their profession
through participation on committees. You can read the details, for instance, about
some of the amazing committee members' work in the Technical Activities Update
on page 64.
Currently, DFI boasts incredible engagement by over 500 members on 26
technical committees, which each provide a practical forum for finding common
ground in the deep foundations and underground construction industry. Dependent
on expertise and interests, members have many avenues to provide input and address
industry issues impacting professionals' daily practices. In other words, they have a
voice to collectively make a difference. Isn't that why we join groups and give back?
Notice that I wrote 26 committees, not 28. That is because two of our committees
recently decided to broaden their base and better educate the deep foundations
community by merging with companion committees. Again, there is strength in
numbers.
The Marine Foundations Committee has joined forces with the Driven Pile
Committee, given common interests among their members, and the fact that they
shared some members. Their bi-annual collaboration with the ASCE COPRI Met
Section will continue with the reconstituted Driven Pile Committee, as will support
of DFI's Ben C. Gerwick Award for
Innovation in the Design and
Construction of Marine Foundations,
and of industry research related to
near shore and offshore challenges.

members, and will operate as a task
force within its broader umbrella.
Given that energy foundations offer a good example of a sustainable approach to
utilizing deep foundations (as geothermal heat transfer elements), the merger will
provide one of many ways the committee can educate others on the benefits, cost
savings and value engineering of sustainable and resilient design and construction.
Stay tuned for upcoming case histories in this magazine from the committee on
using the EFFC-DFI Carbon Calculator, for instance, which assists in comparing and
choosing more sustainable foundation options that often also save money.
