William E. Kruse, P.E., a founding
member of DFI, died on April 30 in
Plainfield, New Jersey.
An international expert
in the geotechnical pile
foundation industry,
Kruse, 89, was part of
the Steering Committee
that planned the
first Pile Talk conference
in 1974 (a predecessor to DFI's
annual conferences once formally
incorporated). He also spoke about the
institute's history during its 8th Annual
Members' Conference in Cleveland,
Ohio, in 1983. Born and raised in
Brooklyn, he lived in New York City
before moving to Plainfield in 1958.
Kruse received a bachelor's degree in
civil engineering from Cooper Union in
1954 before attending officer candidate
school at Rhode Island Naval Station.
He was assigned to the USS Munsee
ATF 107, stationed in San Diego, and
served as a U.S. naval officer in Japan,
the Philippines and the Pacific Northwest.
He was New York/New Jersey/
Philadelphia regional manager for
Raymond International Pile Division,
and an independent consulting
engineer for decades. Kruse served
national and international clients, and
had a passion for every aspect of pile
driving, from concept and design, to
field testing, production and installation.

Martin, Ph.D., P.E., as senior engineer -
innovation and sustainability.
Martin will be
based in Arizona and
focused on the geotechnical
specialty contractor's
initiatives on
environmental and
and providing high-level innovations
within its engineering function. With
over 13 years in the geotechnical
industry, Martin previously worked at
ExxonMobil as a lead geotechnical
engineer on global development
projects. She is the past chair of the
Arizona Geo-Institute and the Region 8
representative for the Geo-Institute's
Local Involvement Committee. Martin
also serves on the sustainability
committees of the Geo-Institute of the
ASCE and DFI. She is a member of the
edi tor i a l pane l for Eng ine e ring
Sustainability, an Institute of Civil
Engineers journal. She recently
completed her Ph.D. at Arizona State
University, with a focus on bio-inspired
geotechnics and lifecycle sustainability
within geotechnical engineering. In
addition, Martin has devoted much of
her career to improving diversity and
inclusion.

up-and-coming industry leader for 2021
in ENR Mountain State's
Top Young Professionals
competition. This year's
competition included
regional contests, such
as the Mountain State
one involving nominees
construct new dams and rehabilitate
existing ones throughout the U.S. and
internationally. His previous roles include
serving as the company's branch
leader in Alpharetta, Georgia. As
southern regional manager, Monroe will
oversee that office and offices in Austin,
Texas, and Greensboro, North Carolina.
He will also explore opportunities to
expand Schnabel's dam and levee
practice in other southern states.
Monroe's role was developed after
the success of western regional manager
for the Dams Business Unit, which
Tom Fitzgerald assumed in 2020.
Fitzgerald has worked
at Schnabel for 20 years,
and supports offices in
Seattle, Washington;
Boise, Idaho; and Denver
and Longmont, Colorado.
Similar to Monroe's
role, Fitzgerald is responsible for
managing business operations in the
western region, creating strategies for
continued growth, and coordinating
with other business units and regions to
facilitate efficient use of firm resources.

and will assist in distributing a full line
