DFI Europe Member: Bauer Executes D-Walls for
Copenhagen Opera Carpark
The Royal Opera House in Copenhagen is one of the most
modern stages in the world. Located on the island of Holmen,
in the harbor of the Danish capital, it not only offers highquality
artistic performances but also amazing vistas. The
area around the opera house is now being supplemented by
another element: the Operaparken project intended to create
underground parking in the center of Copenhagen and near
the opera house, while fulfilling special quality and design
requirements. Above the underground garage with its 300
parking spaces, a park will be provided with trees, ponds and
walking paths. An integrated greenhouse will extend from
the lowest level of the underground garage to the ground floor,
providing both garage levels with daylight. There will also be
direct garage access to the opera house. As an added feature,
the underground car park, like the opera house, will be built
on its own island.
Bauer DK, the Danish subsidiary of Bauer Spezialtiefbau,
was commissioned by client A.P. Møller to execute the twolayer
anchored diaphragm wall for the Operaparken; it will
later become the garage's permanent exterior wall. Bauer -
subcontracting for Hoffmann - previously worked on the new
headquarters of A.P. Møller, creating a secant pile wall as
retaining structure. In total, 6,600 sq m (7,1042 sq ft) of
diaphragm wall will be built for Operaparken using a Bauer
MC 96 equipped with a BC 48 cutter and a Bauer MC 76

equipped with a rope grab. Two anchor drilling rigs will then
insert the 189 anchors into the completed diaphragm wall.
The works began in March 2020, and the project is
expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2021. The
multinational site team consists of Bauer employees from all
over Europe to optimally address conditions. Besides coronarelated
measures, the Copenhagen subsoil also poses a
challenge. The hard flint stone and varied natural and
artificial obstacles in the ground must be considered. The
construction site is also adjacent to Copenhagen's most
expensive residential area, with noise and dust emission
subject to strict requirements.
