Conclusion
Using specially designed instrumentation
allowed the authors to monitor
the Port of Juneau to address upland
property owners' damage and settlement
concerns. In particular, settlement and
cracking at structures associated with
Juneau's Downtown Historic District
were evaluated, with a focus on an
existing foundation's concrete crack to
compare weather-induced changes in
vertical and horizontal deflections
across the crack with transient deflections
that might be induced by piledriving
and human activities.
The monitoring revealed that:
* The maximum ground shear strain
beneath the concrete foundation of
Fishermen's Memorial was calculated
to be about 10 micro strains,
and thus far too small to cause
additional settlement during pile
removal and driving.
* The influence of temperature and
humidity on slab crack movements
in the Tram Building was far higher
than movements during pile driving
and other construction activities.
Maximum crack deflections attributed
to temperature and humidity
variations over seven months of
construction were 90,172 and 8,372
micro-in (2.3 and 0.21 mm) in the
vertical and horizontal components,
respectively.
* Pile driving resulted in a maximum
vertical displacement of 259 microin
(0.0066 mm).
* The highest transient vertical
motion from human activities was
2,825 micro-in (0.07 mm).
* The southwest perimeter of the
Tram Building concrete slab founded
on piles experienced an overall
increase in elevation over the construction
project duration indicating
that settlement did not occur.
Findings from the monitoring program
confirmed that construction of the
Cruise Ship Terminal Berths was
conducted in a manner that was safe
and protective of nearby structures.
Kristen Kolden is president of Alaska Seismic &
Environmental, and specializes in assessing construction
impacts to sensitive habitats and
structures. Her company participates in applied
research of land- and water-based construction
activities, often designing rugged instrumentation
for remote use.
Catherine Aimone-Martin, Ph.D., is an emeritus
professor at New Mexico Tech and the
president of Aimone-Martin Associates. She has
over 43 years' experience monitoring vibrations in
mining and civil projects during foundation
excavations and construction. Aimone-Martin
has developed specialized instrumentation
systems to record and analyze land-based
transient ground excitations, air-borne noise and
underwater impulses and their impacts on
structures and aquatic environments. She has
authored or co-authored over 100 publications
and has received several awards for applied
vibration research.
