Traveling Lecturer
We are excited to announce that Jesús Gómez, Ph.D., P.E., DGEP,
vice president, GEI Consultants, has been selected as the 20232024
Traveling Lecturer. A well-known geotechnical expert
with more than 35 years of design and construction experience
on projects in the U.S., South America and the Caribbean,
Gómez will travel and present a series of lectures to university
students, professional groups and industry associations. The
program promotes the field of geotechnical engineering and
deep foundation construction by encouraging students to
explore a career in the deep foundations industry, providing
information on topics of interest to members of the industry
and raising awareness of how DFI and its activities support the
industry. The lecture series will start in September.

Gómez has an extensive geotechnical construction
background, having acted as design engineer and chief
engineer in foundation contracting organizations, including
Franki Pile Venezuela, where he oversaw the design and
construction of more than 300 high-rise foundation,
excavation support and slope stabilization projects.
He has been the lead designer for numerous design and
research projects of importance that incorporate technological
advancements such as micropiles, soil nailing, single bore
multiple anchors, compressive anchors, removable anchors,
grouting and vibro replacement. He has extensive experience
in design of deep foundations and excavation support and has
completed groundbreaking work on numerical modeling of
soil-structure systems.
Gómez has authored several manuals and guidelines on
earth retaining and foundation systems for the Federal
Highway Administration and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He
has also led research efforts on various topics such as buckling
of micropiles, micropile-footing connections, micropile joint
resistance, compressive anchor technology and soil-structure
interface behavior. Gómez has authored or co-authored more
than 50 publications on practical technological applications
and design in geotechnical engineering. He is an approved
National Highway Institute (NHI) instructor and has extensive
experience teaching the NHI micropile short course to
Department of Transportation agencies across the nation.
