Augered Cast-in-Place and Drilled Displacement Pile
The committee's outreach efforts to transportation
Over the last year, the committee has been
meeting bi-monthly online with two inperson
meetings at the SuperPile and
annual conferences in June and October,
respectively. Our next in-person meeting
will be on Wednesday, June 12, at
SuperPile 2024 in San Francisco. We
welcome everyone to this upcoming meeting!
Our committee has been especially productive with
respect to member participation in awarded Committee
Project Fund (CPF) projects. Our trustee liaison, Morgan
NeSmith, P.E., Berkel & Company Contractors, wrote an
excellent article in the November/December edition of this
magazine outlining the history of successfully funded CPF
projects through the committee. Currently, I continue my
research on the experimental evaluation of confinement
effects on unreinforced grout, applicable to augured cast-inplace
and drilled displacement piles as well as rigid
inclusions. Our newest project comes to us from University of
California, Irvine - the team of Anne Lemnitzer, Ph.D., P.E.,
Jasper Vrugt, Ph.D., and Ph.D. student Genesis Figueroa -
continuing the previously funded research projects on drilled
displacement piles. This phase of the research will
investigate predictive tools for soil improvement and axial
capacity of drilled displacement piles.

Deep Foundations for Landslides/Slope Stabilization
The committee is currently involved in
several items. Planning for S3: Slopes,
Support and Stabilization is ongoing. We
have several committee members active
in the planning process, along with
members from other committees. The
seminar takes place August 6-8, in
Aurora, Colorado. The technical program will feature a variety
of compelling presentations, including some with a local
focus on the region. Again this year, the conference includes
our signature software problem presentation with a panel
discussion.
As part of DFI's Committee Project Fund (CPF), we have
received a draft report for Comparison Between Linear and
Staggered Pile Configurations, prepared by A.J. Metz, P.E., GEI
Consultants, and Roberto Nevarez Garibaldi, P.E., of Subsurface
Construction. The research reviews the systems as slope
stabilization and the efficiency of the different pile layouts.
The authors are presenting their paper at S3 in August.
We are currently accepting and reviewing proposals for
future CPF research. Please feel free to reach out to any
committee member to discuss ideas or provide a proposal.

agencies across the country to encourage the incorporation of
augured cast-in-place or drilled displacement piles into more
bridge structures continues. Committee member Jon
Sinnreich, M.Eng., P.E., GRL Engineers, and I will be
presenting on the topic at the 2024 Southwest Geotechnical
Engineering Conference this May. The conference is targeted
toward geotechnical practitioners in various transportation
agencies and those involved in geotechnical fields related to
the transportation industry.
The committee continues to collect thermal integrity
profiling (TIP) data in augured cast-in-place and drilled
displacement piles to build a larger database for comparison of
such data to measured pile circumference and diameter in its
ongoing Evaluation of In-Situ ACIP Pile Volume research.
Contact me or the committee trustee liaison for more information
on contributing data to the TIP data collection effort.
Finally, a number of technical committee member firms
exhibited at IFCEE in Dallas in May and participated in Tool
Treks, where groups of attendees were guided to visit various
providers of specific technologies including augured cast-inplace
and drilled displacement piles, and spent about 10 to 15
minutes with each provider. This was a unique opportunity
for our member firms to interact with and present
information to the IFCEE attendees.
