Jeffrey Reid, P.G., and Robert Garfield, P.G., Hager-Richter
Geoscience, are leading a task force to update and improve the
website " Application of Geophysical Methods to Highway
Related Problems, " which was turned over to DFI by the
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in 2022. This site
was originally developed in the early 2000s, and is an indepth
resource on a variety of geophysical methods and
applications. It was recently updated by FHWA to a modern
platform, but much work remains to be done to bring the
content up to date with current practice. The task force
includes experts on a range of geophysical techniques and
includes members who were involved with the site's original
development providing valuable insight on its structure and
intent. The task force is also planning to make some structural
changes to the site's layout to make it more user friendly and
is developing a Committee Project Fund proposal to hire a web
designer to do this work. Though the site is a work in progress,
you can view and use it now at
www.dfi-geophysics-tool.org .
The committee's Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBRs)
task force, led by Mary Ellen Large, P.E, BC.GE, Nicholson, and
me, has developed a series of pamphlets for DFI members on
GBRs, and has drafted a position statement on GBRs and
geotechnical risk. The pamphlets are posted under the
GBR I n i t i a t i v e on t he c ommi t t e e we bpa g e a t
www.dfi.org/communities/subsurface-characterization. At
the time of this writing, the position statement is under
review by the DFI Technical Advisory Committee and will
subsequently be rolled out for review by members. To
supplement this effort, the task force hosted a panel at the
IFCEE conference to present and discuss the position
statement and allow participants to interact with panelists to
learn more.
The popular and active Foundation Reuse task force, led by
Andrew Boeckmann, Ph.D., P.E., Dan Brown and Associates,
received approval as a new technical committee and has left
the umbrella of the Subsurface Characterization Committee!

part of its A-GaME (Advanced Geotechnical Methods in

the Geo-Industry Technology Users Groups, where you can
learn more about Cone Penetration Testing, Geophysics and
Measurement While Drilling. These groups are a
collaboration among FHWA, Geo-Institute, transportation
agencies, DFI and Transportation Research Board Committee
AKG20 and are open to all.
