From November 8 - 10, 2021, the
committee is sponsoring DFI's second
Shotcrete Short Course in Golden,
Colorado, directed by Raymond Henn,
Ph.D., RW Henn, and Daniel Millette,
MacLean Engineering. This course is
for industry professionals including
owners, planners, designers, contractors,
consultants and suppliers involved
in the design, planning and construction
of civil and geotechnical engineering,
under-ground tunneling and
mining projects. The 2.75-day course
includes an on-site field demonstration
at the Edgar Mine, and covers handheld
and mechanical (robot) placement
methods.
The commi t tee act ively collaborates
with DFI's Subsurface
Characterization for Deep Foundations
Committee to present a workshop
series on the use, application and
lessons learned on the incorporation of
geotechnical baseline reports (GBR)
into foundation practices. For example,
a GBR workshop is being held during
DFI's Annual Conference in October.
Deep shaft construction is integral
to tunnel construction, and a key place
where the technologies of deep
foundations and tunneling come
together. In our mid-year online
committee meeting in March 2021, the
committee discussed developing a
white paper on the state of practice and
current technology related to shaft
construction, as a springboard for
future magazine articles or technical
papers on the subject. Meeok Kim, P.E.,
of Thornton Tomasetti, has led an effort
to develop a presentation for GeoCongress
2022 on a future vision for
support of excavation shaft design and
construction.

Committee members have
been very active over the last
year, and are nearing completion
of Guidelines for Selecting
Cutoff Wa l l Sys tems . The
committee has also formed
workgroups and has prepared
a structural diaphragm wall base
presentation, which can be used to
demonstrate design and construction
components of these walls. In addition,
several topic-specific modules have
been developed for users to expand on
diaphragm wall details. Our committee
members are also currently working on
finalizing a cutoff wall presentation,

The committee also formed
a workgroup to begin updating
and modifying the Industry
Practice Standards and DFI
Practice Guidelines for Structural Slurry
Walls. In addition to all this internal
work, committee members have been
active in outside organizations and committees
related to slurry walls, including
participating in the ASCE Rebar Subcommittee
that focuses on the tying of
rebar cages, and in the EFFC-DFI task
group for support fluid field research.
