Auger Cast and Helical Piles
for Historic Hotel
FEATURE ARTICLE
Auger cast pile construction inside façade abutting the Golden 1 Center
Built in 1911, the Marshall Hotel is a 5story
historic monument that resides in
the heart of Sacramento, just blocks
from the California State Capitol. Made
of century-old brick and steel, this
landmark hotel is being modernized and
strengthened into a 21st century Hyatt
Centric Hotel. Because the hotel is on
the city's register of historic and cultural
resources, the renovation preserved its
existing red brick façade. The current
renovation demolished the interior of
the 5-story unreinforced masonry structure;
preserved the masonry façade; and
is being constructed into a 172 room,
11-story steel-frame hotel.
Other design considerations included
a rooftop bar at the sixth floor and
a 24,000 gal (90,850 L) fire water storage
tank below the first floor. The approximately
112,000 sq ft (10,405 sq m) project
also includes about 6,000 sq ft (557 sq m)
of ground floor retail space. The new
hotel is utilizing a structural steel frame
within the existing 5-story façade and
light gauge structural metal framing for
the top six stories. The challenge for
developer Presidio Companies was to
preserve two ornate, 5-story, exterior
walls of the original 110-year-old building
to showcase the historic brick façade
as the focal point for the new hotel.
Farrell Design-Build and project
partners set out to merge the old with
the new, but there were many unknowns
to address. For each demolition
phase, as-built data and critical information
provided in the geotechnical
report gave the project team the
necessary resources to effectively work
and rework each foundation design
element.
This article discusses the work

solutions based on the conditions at

walls, drilled pipe piles (DPP) to support

Site History
In the early 1900s in Sacramento,
residents mainly walked the streets
among horse-drawn carriages, wagons
and bicycles. In 1910, Sacramento's
population was 44,000 (compared to
San Francisco's at 416,000), Pacific Gas
and Electric had been newly formed,
and Sacramento was the only city with
large department stores between
Oakland and Reno.
In honor of her parents, Hattie
Clayton Gardiner financed construction
in 1910 for a new hotel in the heart
