adapted pile design locations to accommodate
this site condition. In addition,
the discovery of actual dimensions and
out-of-plane bows of the interior façade
walls into the hotel also presented a
challenge for the piling rig mast. The
contractor worked to provide the dimensions
of these conditions, and Farrell and
Buehler worked to adjust planned ACP
locations to meet the challenge.
Once new drawings were approved,
Farrell installed a total of 104 ACP with a
diameter of 18 in (457 mm) to depths
between 45 to 76 ft (13.7 to 23.2 m). The
ACP load test produced an allowable
capacity of 352 kips (1,566 kN) with less
than 0.25 in (6.4 mm) deflection; that

Due to the varying depth to the
gravel bearing layer and a minimum 8 ft
(2.4 m) embedment into the dense sand
and gravel, each rebar cage had to be
field cut to fit each of the 104 ACP.

foundation support challenges from
each newly discovered site condition.
The timely cooperation between geotechnical
and structural engineers
made this project a huge success, with
the on-time delivery of the planned
foundation support at a cost that was in
line with project budgets and with no
damage to the historic brick façade

2019-2020 Outstanding Project Award
and the ASCE-Sacramento 2020
Outstanding Historical Renovation

Tom Farrell, C.E., G.E., is the president and
principal engineer for deep foundations and
ground improvement at Farrell Design-Build in
Placerville, California. Farrell earned a master's
degree from UC, Davis and a bachelor's degree
from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He has over 30
years of experience in geotechnical, deep
foundation, and ground improvement engineering
and construction and has published multiple
technical papers in support of ground
improvement in California.
Kyle Wallace, P.E., has over 15 years of
experience in designing and building deep
foundation and ground improvement projects.
Wallace earned a bachelor's degree from Chico
State University. He is vice president of operations
and preconstruction at Farrell, and has managed
design-build projects for state, Caltrans, local
agencies, schools, colleges and universities, public
and private developers, the U.S. Navy, and the U.S.
Coast Guard.
John Sims III, P.E., earned a bachelor's degree
from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He is a project
engineer at Farrell Design-Build and designs
ground improvement systems, deep foundations,
shoring, and load test programs.
