standard handheld garden shears or
hedge clippers.
Cultivators recommend cutting at
the base of the plant stem, just above
the soil. The stem contains moisture
that the rest of the plant can draw on to
ensure it doesn't dry too quickly.
It's also important that growers who
use netting to keep plants upright cut
away those nets to avoid knocking off
flower.
Weigh and Hang
In many states, after plants are cut, the
so-called " wet weight " must be recorded
in seed-to-sale tracking systems. Jushi,
4Front and other growers typically bring
scales into the harvest room so that
plants can be weighed before they are
hung on drying racks and transported to
drying rooms.
Depending on what state regulations
allow, some harvesters like to break
up plants before they are hung; others
prefer to hang them whole. Golfieri of
Insa said he likes to break up bushier
plants to help them dry more evenly.
" I noticed that with bushy, compact
plants, the center took longer to dry,
so the dry wasn't as even. By breaking
them down, you get a more even dry, "
he said.
Longer, narrower plants dry more
evenly and therefore don't need to be
broken down.
In a state such as Massachusetts,
Robertson said compliance rules would
make recordkeeping for plants that had
been broken up a " nightmare. "
After plants are weighed, they are
either hung on drying racks or carted
into drying rooms and hung there.
Jushi and 4Front both have mobile
rolling racks so that plants can be hung
in the harvest room and rolled into a
nearby drying room.
" Cutting and moving a plant from a
tray out to the weighing station, that's
generally the fastest process. It can
be the dirtiest and most risky because
if people are moving too fast, and
they're dragging plants on the ground
or through algae or whatever else,
you can ruin product. But that's the
fastest process, then you get a little bit
of a bottleneck around the weighing
stations, " Malman explained.
" Everything's on rolling racks; it's
very systematic, " he said.
