What should packaging manufacturers understand about the cannabis industry?
" The industry is not what they would imagine, " said Nancy Gruskin Warner, founder and CEO of
Assurpack in Englewood, Colorado. " When you hear numbers like, 'It's a $35 billion industry,' you
think big. "
" Because it's on a state-to-state basis, the purchasing for a lot of these companies is done
locally. You don't have the volumes that you would traditionally have with large consumer product
companies-pharma or food-because you don't have the economies of scale yet. I think they have
to be prepared to have smaller footprints than they would in larger market. "
DUE DILIGENCE
Jeremy Ward, chief operating officer of Green Rush Packaging, in Irvine, California, said people look
at cannabis and think it will be easy, but that is not the case. " You really need to make sure you
understand the industry and the specific needs of the industry. Surround yourself with experienced
subject matter experts, be hyper-focused on this industry, gaining that experience and expertise, "
he said.
Ryan Tatum, chief commercial officer at Grove Bags in Cleveland, Ohio, said they try to understand
clients' brand messaging. " Where are they trying to fit within the market? Are they looking more to
be a premium placed product? Are they looking more in the economic entry into the marketplace? ...
That is one of the first things we really figure out, " he said.
