For any other outside packaging company looking to get a foothold in the cannabis industry, there
are fundamentals to consider, such as child-resistant testing.
Guidelines from the Consumer Product Safety Commission outline child-safety construction for
bottle closures, blister packs, metal cans, pump dispensers and other formats. " We all follow that, "
Warner said. " We have to go to an outside certified testing agency to do the testing. And the second
part of it, which I started doing, is to do container-closure testing to identify the protective values
and the protective qualities of the package. "
The head of U. S. Pharmacopeia (USP) recommended that Warner use the USP 671 test, which
provides standards for the functional properties of plastic containers used in pharma. " I've sent my
packages to outside testing labs that pharma uses ... to make sure that the packages are going to
provide the moisture vapor protection that is needed, " Warner said.
Ward agreed that child protection is a big factor, along with shelf life and sustainability. " We're big
on using accredited testing facilities to ensure that the products meet those required standards, "
he said. " The testing can be quite rigorous. Depending on the test, and what type of certification
you're trying to get, it can take a while to fully complete. "
Tatum agreed that cannabis companies should put packaging to the test.
" Use them just like your customers would. Have them for longer term storage, have them in your
pocket when you go on a hike. Leave it in your car one day, " he said. " You can see which one's really
protecting their product integrity. Because at the end of the day, yes, the packaging plays a big part
in the sales and marketing. But what helps people come back especially in this industry is product
integrity. "
THE FUTURE
Cannabis packaging will continue to emphasize sustainable packaging and eco-friendly options,
said Yasha Shamayeri, marketing director of Leafy Pack in Costa Mesa, California.
" Five years ago, there wasn't as much demand for premium packaging. We see the packaging, in
general, just getting more sophisticated as we go on, and tying more into the brand identities
of these companies, " he said. " The uniqueness of packaging is increasing. Brands are really
differentiating themselves on a primary packaging level. "
Kane wants to see a push for states to not require unmanufactured products (flower and pre-rolls,
for example) to be sold in child-resistant packaging. " Science-based evidence shows that without
exposure to light or heat, carboxylic acid is not released. ... Without the carboxylic acid group, these
compounds have the potential to cause only slight therapeutic effects, if anything at all, but will not
lead one to become high or intoxicated. "
But such a change would require cannabis communities taking legislative action in their states,
Kane said. " This would be a huge win on so many fronts for the cannabis industry-like waste
reduction, packaging cost reductions for non-child resistant options for producers and the
economic benefits. "
