California-based KushCo Holdings, which individually
tests 100 adults ages 50-70. They are given five minutes
to open a child-resistant package and, if it's reclosable,
properly close it.
For packaging to pass the test, 90% of the adults tested
must be able to open and properly close the package
during a five-minute test and a one-minute test.
" I think it is very important in our industry to remember
that it is also about components of freshness in the
flower or the concentrates, " said Lilach Mazor Power,
founder and CEO of the Mazor Collective in Phoenix. " If
your packaging does not have that component in mind, it
will become an issue over time. "

CUES FROM PHARMA
Cannabis packaging developers are beginning to take their cues from the pharmaceutical industry,
as the cannabis industry continues to evolve and embrace new methodologies of brand building.
" The overall industry is heading in the direction of pharma, " Corbett said. " It's not there yet. "
She thinks all states currently require child resistance for any kind of infused edibles and
beverages. " I don't think that will ever go away. But there are some states that don't require child
resistance for inhalables. "
Some things companies could do now to prepare for national legalization along the lines of the
pharmaceutical industry include obtaining packaging manufactured in a CGMP facility or requiring
food-grade packaging for edibles.
" There are a number of cannabis companies that aren't there yet, " Corbett said. " If I had a large
cannabis company, I would be looking at the rules for pharma and figuring out what I could do now
to prepare myself so that when it does go that way, I'm ready. "
Warner said that pharma companies often send containers for closure testing. " A lot of companies
make the claim of being an airtight package. But there is no such thing as airtight. "
Pharma's typical product development timelines can be anywhere from three months to decades,
depending on the strategies they have and the complexity of the products, according to Kane of
Sure Lock Packaging.
" On the flipside, cannabis product development timelines are in a much smaller window, " she said.
" It's rushed way too quickly. It's not uncommon for many cannabis producers or brands to be able
to get from concept all the way out to retail in as little as a half year. "
She cautioned, however, that there are risks associated with going that fast. Pharma for example
will often spend a lot of money for custom tooling on blister packs that are exclusive just to them.
" As much as many cannabis companies would love to do similar things like that...the out-of-pocket
expenses are too high, " Kane said.
Airtight sealing and the use of recycled materials are two areas where pharma excels, according
to Ryan Tatum, chief commercial officer at Grove Bags in Cleveland, Ohio. " We need to look as an
