Still, both warehouse-style and greenhouse growing facilities share common security threats that
can be mitigated with planning and execution.
Begin with a layered security strategy
The August 2020 issue of MJBiz Magazine details how indoor facilities should implement a layered
approach to securing their assets. Strategies in the issue include:
Secure the entire property with access-controlled gates or barriers, reinforced walls and
commercial-grade locks.
Use dedicated access points to limit who can enter the facility or specific areas such as the grow
room, vaults, offices and drying/curing rooms.
Consider hiring a security guard for hours of operation, then at night utilize smart surveillance and
motion-sensor technology.
Enforce policies that require all employees to change out of their street clothes and into work attire
before and after entering the areas where plants or cash are stored.
Limit unauthorized access within the facility
Operators should limit employee access to certain areas of the facility to protect against internal
theft or even accidental plant damage.
" It's very important to protect your indoor grow rooms from having just anyone walking into them
at any given time, " says Andy Fleet, director of cannabis business development for ADT Commercial.
" We secure many indoor facilities and always recommend installing access control systems at the
entrances to each room to track who went into the grow room, at what time and for how long. "
