Other subtle but effective techniques Devereux and her family have utilized to protect their outdoor
crops include:
* Growing hemp plants in an area that is not accessible to the public.
* Hanging signs on the mesh fencing informing people they are growing industrial hemp, not highTHC
cannabis.
* Installing motion detectors, which set off an alarm when triggered.
* Being present in the field as often as possible.
The family also built what Devereux calls a " hemp camp, " a cabin that has a view of the entire field
and can serve as a place to sleep during harvest.
Vermont legalized adult-use marijuana in 2020, and Devereux is starting to think about what a
security strategy for sun-grown marijuana would entail.
" For our small, outdoor grow, that just means that we will be spending more time at our beloved
hemp camp. "
INNOVATIONS IN CANNABIS SURVEILLANCE TECHNOLOGY
The cannabis industry has matured significantly over the past decade, and so has the surveillance
technology for plant-touching operations.
Artificial intelligence (A.I.) and other variations of smart technology are being incorporated into
surveillance systems for monitoring cultivation facilities.
" Cannabis businesses are increasingly using A.I. and data analytics to their advantage, " says
Andy Fleet. For example, if an unauthorized individual showed up at a cultivation site early in the
morning, the system would be activated.
" They can engage with the subject over a loudspeaker in real time and inform them that ... their
actions are considered trespassing and law enforcement will be dispatched, " continues Fleet. " With
such a precise interaction, we've seen subjects turn and flee the premises without further incident. "
Many systems also offer push notifications when someone enters a grow room.
Virtual perimeters and invisible fencing
Advancements in smart technology can also play a role in the perimeter barrier.
" This is one of the most important tools we use, " says Drew Stuart, whose company has invested
" tens of thousands of dollars " into High Desert Relief's security systems, which immediately alert
unwanted persons that their presence is detected.
" This technology alone has turned away dozens of potential breaches, " he adds. " As soon as they
enter the intrusion zones, an alarm sounds, and most attempts are prevented before the building
has been touched. "
The smart surveillance technology used by Stuart and his team at their New Mexico facility also
plays a role in effectively safeguarding key areas inside.
" We use DropCams in addition to our DVR surveillance system in the designated secure areas, "
Stuart says. " Ownership and appropriate personnel are alerted when these areas are being
accessed as well as record the activities from different video angles. Any unusual activity can be
addressed immediately with this technology.
