Growers use dimming to ensure uniform intensity throughout the canopy.
" While some cultivars see an increase in cannabinoid expression from UV, the response is very
cultivar-dependent, " adds Mitch Galton, director of business development at Urban-Gro. " There are
also quite a few different types of UV, and it's not clear which will have the most beneficial impact
on plants. The higher the UV energy, the more dangerous it can be for plants and employees. "
Galton continues, " Even with cultivars that show a positive response to UV, it will often be more
valuable for growers to spend the capital expenditure and wattage that would be allocated toward
UV on broad-spectrum photons between 400 and 700nm. "
Not all lighting experts agree, however, that exposing plants to UV will impact their growth.
" There has been almost no scientific research regarding UV on cannabis plants, " adds Christopher
Sloper, vice president of lighting technology at Global Garden Co. " There are light manufacturers
proclaiming they have unlocked the mysteries of UV, and it's simply not true. "
Sloper continues, " Some growers claim positive results (such as increased terpenes and flavonoids)
when UV-A is run whenever the fixture is powered on. Others claim UV-B increases THC when
properly used. The current thinking is to run the UV-B at night for a few hours for the last few weeks
before harvest. When plants are exposed to blue light along with UV, the 'damage' is decreased or
nullified completely. "
IMPORTANCE OF FIXTURES WITH DIMMING CAPABILITIES
Once growers understand the levels and timing at which their lights operate, they may want to
invest in systems with dimming capabilities to help with uniformity.
" Lights with dimming capabilities give you the ability to fluctuate lighting for uniform intensity
throughout a canopy, " notes Reich of Prospiant. " If dimming capabilities are not available, a
checkerboard light grid design can be used instead. This method, which operates as every other
light running on separate switches, offers a dimming effect. "
