Dimming the lights to vary intensity allows plants to photo-acclimate between growth stages.
" By lowering the intensity and slowly ramping it up over the first few weeks (of the flowering stage),
plants are typically able to acclimate to flower rooms much more quickly, which can have quite a
few benefits down the road, " says Galton of Urban-Gro.
Dimming capabilities can also allow cultivators to simulate sunrise and sunset.
" While plants can acclimate to receiving light with the flick of a switch, most growers now prefer
the use of sunrise and sunset periods to mimic outdoor grow settings and gradually increase light
intake for their plants, " says Daniel Pilsworth, global director of product marketing at Fluence.
Dimming technology also benefits greenhouse growers by giving them the opportunity to maintain
consistent light levels when sunlight is reduced, such as during wildfire season.
" Cultivators can create specific zones throughout their greenhouse that can be adjusted to offset
natural light level changes stemming from sources like morning fog, heavy clouds or seasonal
changes, " Pilsworth adds. " The use of dimming zones in the greenhouse helps growers maintain
adequate light levels across their entire crop canopy, helping overcome shading caused by walls
and other physical infrastructure. "
