" For indoor growers who depend on lights, opting to run lights outside of peak demand hours
(8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) is a more sustainable way to operate, " adds Jared Freyer, MEP systems manager at
Prospiant. He encourages indoor growers to negotiate lower electrical rates with utility suppliers in
exchange for operating outside of peak demand times.
LED LIGHTS LEAD THE WAY
At this point, most cultivation and lighting experts agree that LED lights are essential for improving
the sustainability of a grow operation.
" LED lighting itself is one of the biggest changes a
cannabis grower can make to promote sustainability, "
says Daniel Pilsworth, global director of product
marketing at Fluence Bioengineering. " LEDs require less
energy to maintain an optimal environment for plant
growth, and the 40% reduction in heat output compared
to HPS fixtures means less cooling is needed to balance
the temperature of the cultivation environment. "
" By integrating LEDs into your grow facility, there is
much less waste created, " notes Anthony Domangue, a
grower liaison at Fohse. " HID systems traditionally waste
a substantial amount of energy in the form of heat.
LEDs offer more usable photosynthetic active radiation
(PAR) light to your canopy at lower intensities, creating
efficiency. "

LED lights can cost more than HPS lighting, but the potential savings in energy make LEDs an
attractive option.
" Think about your long-term costs and efficiencies, " adds Melnichenko of Hawthorne. " The cost of
electricity is only going to go up, and LEDs can give you the performance you need with longer-term
cost savings. "
On top of the financial benefits, LED lights are also better for the environment compared to HID
lighting materials.
" HID fixtures need to have the bulbs swapped out, typically annually, " adds Christopher Sloper,
vice president of lighting technology at Global Garden Co. " These bulbs are usually destined for the
landfill. Many of them contain mercury and other heavy metals. On the other hand, LEDs don't have
this lamp-swap issue, and most of their components can be recycled. "
