GREATER LIGHTING INTENSITY CAN LEAD TO IMPROVED EFFICIENCY
Just as there's no one-size-fits-all solution for growing quality cannabis, commercial growers also
approach sustainability through different lenses and operating strategies.
" Sustainability looks different for every operator, " says Mitch Galton, director of business
development at Urban-Gro.
" While reducing wattage often seems like a straightforward strategy to improve sustainability, it
can actually be more effective for growers to increase the intensity to drive yield in certain cases, "
he adds. " Increasing light intensity to improve yield can actually help improve the overall facility
efficiency or sustainability by increasing yield per unit of total facility power consumption. "
IMPORTANCE OF PROPER LIGHTING FIXTURES
In addition to LED bulbs, horticulture lighting experts recommend focusing on lighting fixtures to
achieve long-term sustainability.
" Sustainable fixtures are built to last, " says Mike Howard, chief horticulture officer at Fohse. " By
utilizing fixtures with light-harvesting sensors, such as the O6i, you can measure the current
conditions of your greenhouse and meet your (daily light integral) targets without using too much
light and wasting money/energy. "
" Sustainability from lighting systems comes primarily from electrical savings, " adds Sloper of
Global Garden Co. " The correct number of fixtures, proper placement and hanging heights to hit
your light intensity are key. Too many, improperly placed or too powerful fixtures are wasteful. "
