broad-spectrum light is vital for indoor growers, since that fixture is the primary light source for the
crop. Greenhouse growers can concentrate more on light intensity and footprint since the fixture is
a supplement to sunlight. "
When planning the facility, cultivation teams also should remember that lighting fixtures will have a
direct impact on other areas of the operation, such as the HVAC system and fertigation.
" It's critical to design your lighting systems alongside proper heating, ventilation and air
conditioning (HVAC), " adds Mark Reich, a system integration engineer at Prospiant, an Ohio-based
manufacturer of greenhouses and commercial growing equipment. " Customers need expertise on
every variable that could affect their yields. "
" Media selection and nutrients significantly affect each plant's response to light fixtures, " adds
Anthony Domangue, who works as a grower liaison for LED lighting manufacturer Fohse. " Soil
systems utilizing organic inputs tend to prefer lower photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD)
levels as well. Hydroponic media and soluble nutrients tend to perform better under higher light
levels. "
Regardless of the cultivation strategy, the yield goals for most growers should remain the same at
" about 50 grams of dry flower per square foot per harvest, " according to Douglas.
" The key to success is providing plants with the right intensity of light throughout their life cycle, "
Douglas adds. " Indoor flowering plants should receive 1,000-2,000 micromoles at the canopy level,
while greenhouse growers should aim for a daily light integral (DLI) of about 40 moles per day. "
