Some experts believe growers fall into two categories: standard-light-level growers and high-light-level growers.
INTENSITY MATTERS
The intensity level of the lighting fixtures will impact how quickly the plants develop as well as their
quality.
Growers should note that turning lights to higher intensities to drive photosynthesis carries risks
and potential to drive up costs.
" Growers fall into two categories: standard-light-level growers and high-light-level growers, " says
Christopher Sloper, vice president of lighting technology at Global Garden Co. Sloper published the
third edition of his book, " The LED Grow Book, " in 2020.
According to Sloper, the industry lacks operating standards for these two classes of growers, and
ideal intensity levels within most commercial facilities should fall within a range of 800-1,000
micromoles per square meter every second (µmol/m2
/s).
" For those commercial growers who want to 'push it' and grow with higher photon intensities, highlight-level
growers shoot for the range of 1,200-1,500+ µmol/m2
/s, " Sloper continues. At such high
intensity, grow parameters must be exact. Sloper says cultivators should be aware of the following:
* Proper leaf-surface temperatures are critical.
* Humidity must be on point to keep plants transpiring.
* Higher nutritional strength is needed to keep up with higher photosynthetic rates.
* Higher levels of carbon dioxide are a must.
High-light-level growers may have better luck with indoor, warehouse-style facilities than with
greenhouses.
