EMPHASIS ON BUDTENDER TRAINING
The learning curve for cannabis is steep, so training and education is essential for turning new hires
into knowledgeable assets. This is where hiring individuals who want to learn is key.
" Cannabis dispensary staff must have a thirst for knowledge, continuing their education in and out
of the workplace, " says Curran. " Most customers entering a dispensary do not know which product
they want in advance and rely on budtenders to guide their experience. Budtenders are likely the
most decisive influence on what consumers purchase. "
Curran adds: " Cannabis businesses must train all employees to have a thorough knowledge of the
plant, the products offered and what effects they might induce to provide consumers with the
right information. Uninformed employees can easily lose a sale if they fail to answer a shopper's
questions. "
Businesses should also provide new hires and existing employees with educational materials to
refer to while getting up to speed at the job.
" It starts with training from day one, " notes Stuart. " Providing learning materials that you are
continuously developing and revamping ... that you require your new employees to study upon hire
is a great start. "
" The training process should go beyond your daily duties, " adds Mazor Power. " It is important to
teach the sales process: Understating the product offerings and what will benefit the customers.
Focusing on customer service, listening to your customers and offering the best products for them. "
After new hires have begun learning about their role, it's good practice to have them shadow an
experienced employee to see how they interact with customers on the sales floor.
