Even after an employee has been on the team for some time, like a Jedi, their training and education
is never complete. This is especially true in an industry like cannabis, which is constantly evolving
and rolling out new products.
" Staff leaders will continue training every week and are passionate about bringing new ideas and
knowledge to the table while driving real impact for the business, " adds Perullo of AWH. " Providing
employees with an open communication line for education is also necessary for keeping staff
members up to speed with changes in the market and customer preferences. "
MITIGATING EMPLOYEE TURNOVER
Employee turnover-notably budtender turnover-has become an industry-wide problem for
cannabis retail businesses.
MJBizDaily reported in 2022 that up to 55% of budtenders had changed jobs during the previous year.
" If turnover seems to be a trend, maybe look within to see what the cause for the turnover is, "
advises Stuart of High Desert Relief. " One would think that working at a dispensary would be a
dream job, so if there is a consistent reason why people or leaving, find out what that is. "
Stuart adds that a " strong starting wage " is important for worker retention, along with consistent
reviews, proper scheduling and perks.
