consider sustainable or better for the environment.
SAVING MONEY WITH SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS PRACTICES
Incorporating sustainability into a grow operation doesn't have to be an expensive endeavor. Rather,
energy-efficient systems should pay for themselves in the long run and help companies save capital.
Some utility companies offer monetary rebates for businesses that use LED lights or wait until offpeak
hours to run their HVAC systems.
" Many of the newer states coming online have limited the amount of electricity their lights can
provide to about 36 watts per square foot of canopy, " says David Kessler, executive vice president
and chief science officer at Agrify. " There are rebate programs for LEDs that are higher efficiency. I
won't say that every program is the same, but you can document your electrical savings and there
will be monetary rebates and incentives to switch. If you work the program, you can actually get
quotes for your lighting, and the state will help you pay for the lighting. "
Kessler adds that similar rebates exist for high-efficiency HVAC systems.
Cultivators should also consider a sustainability audit to assess each area of their operation and
find ways to increase overall efficiency.
" Whether you do a true cost accounting or even a life-cycle analysis, what may surprise cannabis
operators is that choosing more environmentally sustainable options may also be better on the
bank book, " Singh says.
