Tin container for pre-rolls looks bold on the shelf without breaking the bank

eadliners pre-roll
packaging combines
good looks, product
protection, sustainability and cost
effectiveness.
Philadelphia-based Ethos
Cannabis, a vertically integrated,
multistate operator, launched
Headliners in its stores and at
select Massachusetts retailers in
November 2022.
The product line includes a
solo pack with a single, 1-gram
pre-roll and a duet that holds two
half-gram pre-rolls. Both come
in sativa-dominant Headliners
Opener, hybrid-blend Headliners
Intermission and indica-heavy
Headliners Showstopper.
The package, a steel-plated tin
box with a sliding lid, sets Headliners
apart on the shelf: Sleek, embossed
tin stands out in a sea of doob tubes
and pre-roll cartons and boxes.
The materials also protect
Headliners pre-rolls during
distribution and in consumers'
pockets and purses. Tin offers safe
storage for partially smoked prerolls,
too, since there is no plastic
that can melt.
In addition to being more
durable than a doob tube, the tin
is easier to recycle, said Patrick
LaRose, Ethos Cannabis' vice
president of production. It's also
reusable, " which we hope will
drive sustainability, " LaRose told
MJBizMagazine. " The style of the
packaging begs for reuse. "
The sturdy tin does not require
a carton for transport, which
eliminates a source of packaging
waste.

The Cost Equation
On the operations side, Ethos
achieves economy of scale by using
the same size tin for the Headliners
solo and duet packs across all three
cannabis types.
" All manufacturers-cannabis
or not-are trying to simplify
and streamline their operations, "
LaRose said.
" Utilizing the same packaging for
multiple SKUs is one of the ways
we're able to produce a premium
offering at a reasonable price, "
he added. " In the era of supplychain
challenges, (the more) a
manufacturer can do to reduce risk
of material supply, the better off
they'll be. "
Choosing an off-the-shelf
package rather than a custom
design also keeps costs in check
without sacrificing distinctiveness.
" Customized embossing and art
make (the packaging) one of a
kind, " LaRose said.
To differentiate the individual
Headliners products, Ethos applies
a color-coded,
pressure-sensitive
label detailing the
pre-roll quantity
and strain type to
the tin's top and
side. A label with
batch information
is affixed to the
bottom of the
tin box.
In the Pipeline
Going forward,
Ethos plans
to release line
extensions and
offer Headliners in more sizes.
" We have more to come, with
multipack variations in the
pipeline, " LaRose said, adding
that the company looks forward
to expanding the distribution of
Headliners into states beyond
Massachusetts.
