This year's Boutique Design Power Players: Women Leaders in
Hospitality are an accomplished and inspiring group of women
paving the way in the hospitality industry. Here, several share their
experience and advice, from paying attention to the details to what
they're working on now, and what they'd like to see in terms of a
more diverse and inclusive industry. Hear more from these and the
rest of the group during the Women Leaders in Hospitality Breakfast
and Panel Discussion, a ticketed event presented in partnership with
NEWH, at BDNY on Monday, November 15th from 9:30-11 AM.
Did you have a big break? When I fi rst started at
Campo, I was hired as an architect. The fi rm was
known for architecture and historic tax credit
services but did not have an in-house interior
design department. Because of my dual licensure,
we were able to accept our fi rst project where
we offered both architecture and interior design.
The collaboration was incredibly successful, and
word traveled fast among our clients. We were
awarded more and more integrated projects, and
my role changed from architect to director of
interior design. I now manage the department
that has quadrupled in size.
What would you like to see in terms of a
more inclusive industry? My background in
humanitarian design and work with the Peace
Corps frames my perspective of inclusive design,
which I see in terms of creating livable buildings
and spaces, with a sense of pride and place,
that empower members of a community with
opportunities to learn and grow.
The staff at Campo is 60 percent female, which
happened just by hiring the best people. We
work hard to make the offi ce an inclusive space
with no glass ceilings, where everyone has a
voice. Architecture and design shapes our world
through our sense of community, and that is
especially evident in hospitality with the rise
of lifestyle brands. We could do much better
as an industry (including design, construction,
and hotel management) to promote this type of
community empowerment through education,
skills training, and mentorship.
Favorite way to unwind? I love to bake. There is
something about baking that satisfi es both sides
of my brain, with the precision of measurements
paired with the creativity of decoration. My
phone is fi lled with pictures of my daughter, and
pictures of cupcakes.
