WFH Projects to Remain
Steady Post-Pandemic
Integrators expect 43% of all 2021 commercial projects will include
a Work From Home element, down from 61% during the throes of
COVID-19. by Jason Knott
NOT SURPRISINGLY, the COVID-19 pandemic has been
a boon for Work From Home (WFH) projects for
integrators, but will the trend continue as the pandemic wanes?
Yes, but slightly scaled down in 2021 compared with 2020.
That is primary conclusion from the Commercial Integrator
Work From Home Deep Dive Study, which was fielded by CE
Pro's sister publication to its audience of commercial AVfocused
integrators. The research shows that in 2020 nearly
two out of every three commercial projects deployed by
integrators (61%) included a WFH element. For 2021, the trend
has slightly slowed to 43% of projects, but that still represents
a solid chunk of business and thus a continuing opportunity.
The Commercial Integrator Deep Dive Study comes on the
heels of the recent CE Pro Resimercial Deep Dive conducted
earlier in the spring. That study revealed the typical custom integrator
did six home office projects in 2020 at a median price

point of $8,601. It also showed that the most common areas
in the home for a home office are dedicated office spaces,
followed by the great room and den/family room.
For years, integrators have been able to satisfy the needs
of individual clients both in their residences and commercial
offices. It is not uncommon for a residential client to request
the integrator to deploy technology in their place of business
after having a home theater, home network or other
system installed.
Likewise, satisfied commercial clients have similarly requested
integrators to do some work in their homes after having an
installation at the office. The pandemic has certainly exacerbated
that trend as the " home became the office " for so many
people. In all, 64% of integrators reported they did some level
of home installation for a commercial client over the past 12
months.
