Research Firm Eyes Generative AI & Future of Smart Home
THE CORPORATE world
has been infatuated with
generative AI ever since
OpenAI released ChatGPT
to the masses, and the
technology is beginning
to take hold in enterprise
applications, helping users
write emails, make presentations,
develop marketing
content, automate IT
functions, and, according to
Gartner, the smart home.
In research published
earlier this year, the tech
research and consulting
firm asserted generative AI
has the potential to enable
smart home innovations
for better user experience
and value-added services
across six fields, including
natural human-machine
interactions, home virtual
assistants, energy or utility
management, home automation,
intelligent security
and urgent issue settling.
The organization calls on
smart home product leaders
to plan to integrate AI
capabilities into their future
products. Enterprise technology
is becoming littered
with generative AI, with
Microsoft, Google, AWS and
other large workplace technology
providers launching
their own large language
models (LLMs) and chatbots
that integrate with various
workplace tools.
However, Gartner
believes generative AI will
improve the smart home
market by accelerating its
evolution and enable smart
home applications to be
more intelligent by using a
consistent AI platform.

introduced JoshGPT, an AIbased

platform that includes a
generative assistant to help
answer questions.
Meanwhile, Google is
reportedly planning to improve
Google Assistant with
generative AI capabilities.
According to Gartner,
successful integrations
of generative AI in smart
homes will help improve the
quality of human-machine
interactions, improve the
accuracy of home assistant
platforms, improve energy
efficiency, improve the intelligence
of home systems,
and act as a cybersecurity
assistant for users.
FCC Seeks Input on Scope of Cyber Trust Mark Program
THE U.S. FEDERAL Communications Commission (FCC)
HAS officially proposed its Cyber Trust Mark voluntary
labeling program for smart devices that would certify the
baseline cybersecurity of devices and is now soliciting public
comments on the scope of the proposed program.
The organization has published its official Notice of
Proposed Rulemaking to officially propose the new rules for
cybersecurity of smart devices and is asking for comments
on the type of devices or products to be included, oversight
of the program, how to develop security standards for a
wide range of devices and how to demonstrate compliance
with those standards, among other issues.
The FCC and Biden Administration announced the proposed
U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program on July 18 with the

goal of educating consumers and users of smart devices on
the security of devices they're purchasing.
Similar to the EPA's Energy Star label that tells consumers
about the energy efficiency of a product, the Cyber Trust
Mark would be designed to give consumers knowledge that
the device they're purchasing meets a set of cybersecurity
standards. The program is scheduled to launch by the end
of 2024.
To begin, the program would essentially include IoT
devices as defined by NIST, which defines them as " devices
that have at least one transducer (sensor or actuator) for
interacting directly with the physical world and at least one
network interface (e.g., Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) for interfacing
with the digital world. "
